Intelligence Is Cheap. Judgement Is Not.

Nick Cao • March 29, 2026

Being 'Smart' Is No Longer What You Know

For decades, we defined “smart” the same way.

The person with the answers.
The highest marks.
The fastest thinker in the room.

In 2026, that definition is broken.

Because the moment AI could answer almost anything…

Knowing more stopped being impressive.

Intelligence Is Now Cheap

Tools powered by companies like NVIDIA can now:

  • Write code
  • Analyse data
  • Generate strategy
  • Produce creative

Faster than any human.

So if smart means knowing answers…

You have already been outperformed.

The First Layer: Learning Faster

The obvious shift is this: Smart people learn faster.

They:

  • Adapt quickly
  • Iterate rapidly
  • Improve under pressure

They do not wait for clarity.
They create it through action.

In modern business, this is critical.

Markets move faster.
Data updates constantly.
Strategy is no longer fixed.

Learning speed now beats knowledge depth.

But this is only part of the story.

Speed Alone Is Not Enough

Moving fast does not mean moving well.

You can:

  • Move fast in the wrong direction
  • Scale bad ideas
  • Optimise something that should not exist

So speed alone is not intelligence. It is just efficiency.

The Real Definition of Smart

According to Jensen Huang, truly smart people sit at an intersection:

  • Technical capability
  • Human empathy
  • The ability to infer the unspoken

This is where intelligence becomes judgement.

1. Reading What Isn’t Said

Most people rely on data.

Smart people read what sits underneath it.

They:

  • Notice hesitation
  • Sense friction early
  • Understand emotion behind behaviour

In marketing, this is everything.

The best ideas are not built on what people say.

They are built on what people cannot explain.

2. Taste Is the New Advantage

AI can create almost anything.

That makes one question more important:

What is worth creating?

This is taste.

The ability to:

  • Recognise what is good
  • Choose what matters
  • Set direction before execution

Without taste, speed becomes noise.

3. Seeing Ahead

Most people react. Smart people anticipate.

They connect signals early and act before others do.

This is not prediction.

It is pattern recognition shaped by experience.

4. Human Depth Still Wins

As AI improves, human qualities matter more.

  • Empathy
  • Context
  • Nuance

Machines can generate outputs.

They do not truly understand people.

And business is still built on people.

So What Does Smart Mean Now?

Not knowledge.
Not credentials.
Not just speed.

It is this: The ability to learn quickly, choose wisely, and understand deeply.

Or more simply: Learning velocity guided by judgement.
