There's More On Their Mind Than Just Your Ad

Nick Cao • July 1, 2025

“The ads aren’t converting.”

That’s what the numbers said.

We were running Google Search ads for a school.

Targeting the right keywords.
Getting solid engagement.
Time on site was strong.
Bounce rates were low.

But the enquiry form? Quiet.

So what was wrong?

We took a step back and looked beyond the numbers.

Because joining a school isn’t like ordering takeaway.

It’s a high-consideration decision.

Parents think about curriculum.
Location.
Reputation.
University outcomes.
Pastoral care.
Cultural fit.
Social development.

And, yes - the school newsletter font.

They don’t see an ad and click “Enrol Now.”
They observe.
They read.
They ask around.
And only then, they act.

And that’s what we saw.

Even though the ads didn’t get the immediate enquiry, something else was happening:

Brand searches started climbing.
Organic enquiries started rising.
Trust was building in the background.

The ads were working.

Just not in the way performance dashboards like to measure.

They introduced the school.
Built familiarity.
Planted the seed.

Weeks later, parents would return through organic search and convert, because the ads had done their job indirectly.

Here’s the moral:

Don’t judge your ads too quickly.
Especially when your product involves trust, time, and emotional weight.

Think about your customer’s journey.
Zoom out from the last click.

So next time your ads aren’t performing the way you hoped.

Take a step back.
Look closer at your business.
And ask yourself:

Are the ads really not working, or are they just doing their job in a different way?
