The Google Ads Country Exclusion Hack That Even Pros Miss

Nick Cao • November 11, 2025

How to stop Google Ads wasting money outside your target country — even when you think it’s locked in.

You’d think telling Google, “Only show my ads in Australia,” would be enough.

But it not always is.

Even with your campaign set to Australia only, and location options locked to Presence: people in or regularly in your targeted locations, Google can still slip your ads beyond the border.

Why? Because Google’s location system isn’t GPS-perfect. It uses a cocktail of IP addresses, account data, and “regular location” history. That means travellers, expats, VPN users and mis-tagged IPs can all trigger impressions in places you never meant to advertise.

And while a stray click might seem harmless, across thousands of impressions it adds up. Those few cents of leakage? That’s your money being burned overseas.

The Fix: One Simple Layer of Protection

The smartest advertisers don’t rely on Google’s promises. They build a Country Exclusion List.

Here’s how:

  1. Copy this list →  [Download Here]
  2. Delete the countries you actually want to target.
  3. Set Location Options to Presence only.
  4. Go to your Google Ads campaign → Locations → Location exclusions → Add locations by bulk → Paste in the list

Now you’ve built a geo-firewall, a shield against wasted spend.

The Logic Behind the Hack

Even Google admits: “Location targeting is not 100 % accurate.”

That’s why this trick matters.

It’s not paranoia, it’s precision marketing.

⚠️ Notes

  • Syria, Iran, North Korea, Crimea, and some disputed regions don’t appear in Google Ads at all, they’re blocked by sanctions.
  • Expect a tiny margin of error, around 0.1 – 0.5 % of impressions may still come from outside your target. That’s normal.

In advertising, small leaks sink big ships.

This five-minute tweak won’t make headlines, but it might quietly save you thousands.
